Rhinoplasty FAQ's

Will insurance cover (rhinoplasty) nasal surgery?
The role of health insurance is to affect the health and function of the individual. When the nose has an obvious obstruction from a deviated septum and/or enlarged turbinates, insurance will cover a portion of the cost. However, when it is combined with cosmetic alteration to affect the appearance of one’s nose, insurance does not cover and it is fraudulent to try and pass a cosmetic procedure off as a “functional procedure”. In the consultation, Dr. Dedo will make it clear whether this is a purely cosmetic or a combined functional/cosmetic procedure. What his office staff will do is file insurance for the functional part and refund the balance to you which has been paid by the insurance company. However, one can count on an assessment for anesthesia and the facility to account for the time performing the cosmetic part of the operation.

I have broken my nose and cannot breathe through it. The appearance has changed. Will insurance cover this?
If there is a functional and obvious deformity from nasal trauma, the insurance will pay for a reduction of the nasal fracture and correction of the nasal obstruction. However, any modification of the cartilages of the nose to affect a reduction in a hump or reduction of the tip to affect a change in the appearance is not covered by insurance. As with any surgical procedure, the doctor will file insurance for any functional part of the procedure and refund any payment by the insurance company. However, the full surgical fee and if the procedure is done in the AAAHC accredited facility of Dr. Dedo’s, the anesthesia and surgical facility fee will be paid in advance.

OTHER QUESTIONS FOR RHINOPLASTY PATIENTS:

Will I bruise after rhinoplasty surgery?
Dr. Dedo has perfected his rhinoplasty technique with infiltration of an anesthetic along with topical anesthetics that markedly reduce the likelihood of bruising and swelling. By using tiny osteotomes and limiting the dissection, the majority of his rhinoplasty rhinoplasty patients do not bruise and those that do have a very small discoloration at the corner of their eyes. This bruising will last and gradually dissipate over the 2-4 weeks following rhinoplasty surgery. In order to reduce the likelihood of any bruising, all rhinoplasty patients are required to discontinue aspirin and any aspirin containing compound (Advil, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Naprosyn, Vitamin E).

I have been told that the nose is packed and a huge amount of packing is removed that results in a tremendous amount of discomfort and pain. Is this true?
Over the years, Dr. Dedo has been able to markedly reduce the amount of packing in the nose. 95% of all rhinoplasty rhinoplasty patients have a small piece of packing placed in the nose at the time of surgery that is removed in the recovery room prior to discharge from the surgical facility. Rarely, the packing is left in overnight and removed the next morning.

Are there any dressings or splints on my nose after rhinoplasty surgery?
Dr. Dedo uses three different types of external dressings to hold the surgical changes of the nose in place. These include a small plaster splint, a small Denver splint or a small moldable splint that is left on the nose for one week.

Will I be able to breathe through my nose after rhinoplasty surgery?
Even the majority of rhinoplasty patients note the presence of nasal obstruction from a deviated septum before surgery. Postoperatively, because of the trauma of the surgical procedure, the lining will swell thereby causing obstruction. This gradually dissipates over two weeks.

Why do doctors have to operate a second or third time on a nose?
With any surgical procedure, the healing and the procedure itself is not an exact science. When one deals with living tissue that has the ability to form scar tissue, it is sometimes necessary to go back in and revise any irregularities in the bone.
